Can anyone tell me how to get the mold off old deer hides. We have a cabin that we use in the summers. I found some deer hides from
my father's hunting days (40 yrs ago). A couple of the softer ones
have some light mold. I know my children would treasure these. How can I best clean them?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Only if I were in your situation, I would flat out take it to a taxidermist (a good one) and have them send it to be re-tanned (chrome) It's hard to say how it was tanned in the first place. If it was an old alum tan it might be trash which is why I say send it to be chrome tanned. If the hide has mold on it, at some point in time it was damp (wet). However, it could have been chrome tanned in the first place. in witch case you could clean it with just about any thing. sounds like this is a family heirloom, and I would not take a chance on it. If there is no discoloration of the leather under the mold spots, it's just surface mold. Spray with Lysol and lay them in the sun. The sunlight kills the spores. Then put them somewhere dry and protect them.
Or, take them to a taxidermist as advised.
If the leather is discolored, only a pro can clean these.
