Low pH in Alum tanning

In my part of the world I do not have access to the commercial tanning products like Krowtann, Kwik-n-Eze, EZ-100 etc. I am experimenting with the traditional Alum tanning mixture as quoted a few times in this forum. Purpose is to treat small game skins like Impala and Springbuck for rugs. On mixing Aluminum Sulfate with water, the pH drops. Why? Is an acid forming eg Sulfuric acid? On adding the salt, is another chemical reaction taking place? What is the active ingredient in this mixture for tanning? I need some answers or references on the chemical reactions please.

Alum HAS a low pH, salt is neutral. It truly scares me to think of anyone using alum tans on impala and springbok, but to even think of using alum tans for rug work is beyond my capacity. You need to contact Bruce Rittel directly. Just click on his hyperlink and spell out all your concerns. He'll gladly help you. (He's at the NTA this week, but will get to you soon, I'm sure.)

Most tans do. No acid isnt forming. Neutralize after tanning to aroun 5 and you will be ok.
