To home tan or not to home tan a bear?

I would like to ask those of you who have big drums, and fleshing machines, and have or still home tan their bear hides for rugs, what they think of it. Is it worth the effort, and is it as easy as Bruce says. What are things to keep in mind other then the shaving and oiling?

To answer your questions:

If you have the large drums and the knowledge and supplies (chemicals, etc.) to tan skins, hides, fur or whatever, you CAN do just as good a job as the larger tanneries that do nothing but tanning. Granted, you will bust your butt a little to get the job done CORRECTLY on any tanning job. There are no "do-overs" as it has to be done right the FIRST time.

On bear: Fleshing, degreasing, combing the hair and breaking the hide are very important if not the MOST important. Again, the knowledge and of course the experience on HOW to use your tanning equipment, chemicals and other supplies will always be the breaker in any operation.

I say unless you have alot of experience and esp. if its a clients bear just send it to a good tannery. For about a $100. its done right and more likely to have no problems.
