Rehydrating problem

Submitted by Rob on 7/29/05 at 4:59 PM. ( ) 64.12.116.197

I know this question was just on here not long ago but I cannot find it in the archives. I have a white tail cape and a bobcat that were salted and dried stiff. I put them in the brine to rehydrate but after 36 hours they are still not like they should be. My brine has 2-3 pounds of salt to the gallon. Could my brine be to "stout"?

I remember just reading about it but can not remember what was said.

Thanks,
Rob

Also there is still salt stuck to the flesh side pretty heavy in places.

I usually use 1-2 Pounds. I Boil my water and add 2-3 pounds of salt to the gallon. When it has dissolved most of it I pour it into my tub then add more water too it. I think I did not add the extra water this time.
I Don't think it will hurt to add it now or will it.

i would use the following solution.
1/2 lb salt to every gal water. and 1/2 oz. fabrick softner to every gal. remove the hide as soon as it is limp. this works very well to remove all the dryed blood. and your hide will be white and the water red. rinse twice. then pickle.

Rehydrate it right

What you want to do for the dry salted skins is to follow this formula, use 1/4 lb of salt to each gallon of water, and 1/2 oz of Relax R to each gallon. You can leave them overnight if needed. The more salt that you have in your bath the more its going to restrict you skins, not letting them rehydrate properly. The Relax R can be stretched to 2oz for every 5 gallons of water, and have your water at room tempeture. Never warmer then 85 to 90. We can send out a free technical hand book if you need one.
