I have a little racoon skinned and in the salt now. It has been in the salt for 18 hours now. When I cheaked it it was not stiff or dry like all my salted deer capes were, is there a problem, and could it be I am using the wrong salt,(if theres such thing)? thanks

are fatty little critters. sometimes the moisture can be gone but the fat in the skin will keep them from getting rock hard.

18 hours is not enough time.

See Joes' post!

Even buried in salt it will not be stiff, you need to have the skin on a raised tray with the AIR CIRCULATING UNDER IT.

The salt will wick away the moisture, but bacteria can still grow on in a salted skin.

Change the salt, leave another 6 hours and put a fan on it to help dry the skin.

It is ALL IN THE ARCHIVES IF YOU WILL RESEARCH IT!

salt drying is the words for you to start with.

I have spent the last two years reading the archives, that problem is covered at lest one hundred times.

....Humidity is higher and thing will take longer to dry out.
