but you can toss them as is into the pickle. they will just take longer to "pump up". Have a good one! Joe
Been a thin skinned animal will I need to shave it?
If you are mounting them; I do not belive they will need to be shaved. If you are tanning for flat skins or rugs they should be shaved a little bit. Not much just enough to "break" the surface of the flesh side. Joe
Jeff. You will have to remove the membrane for the tan to take. I shave just to remove the membrane.
had to remove membrane for tan to be effective
That sure is some poor advice. You can ask any of the experts on this forum. It is imperitive to remove the membrane or the tan will not penetrate the skin. What you end up with is a pickled poorly tanned skin. Try to soften a deer skin with the membrane on. It ain't gonna happen!
for you Jeff. If you send any skin to a tannery it is sent across the fleshing machines. From Bobcat to Zebra. This is for removing the membrane and any meat or fat left on the hide. If it were that easy to tan a skin there would be no tannery. If you are going to do the job do it right or don't do it at all. Remove all of the membrane or the skin won't tan.
