I recently mounted a caribou that is fully dried. When I went to do the finish work I noticed the hair on the inside and outside was stained light brown from the tanning oil leaching out into the hair. I was able to remove alot of it with Lacquer thinner but the stain still remains. I spent a half hour in the archives and didn't have any luck. Rather than experimenting, I thought I'd see if anyone has experience with this problem. Thanks...Jer

what was the procedure you used to tan and mount
Chris, I used EZ Tan 100 following Bruce's instructions. I've done 50-60 deer this way with no tanning problems in any way. The oil was only on the ear hair inside and out. The rest of the hide is fine. I use earliners with epoxy adhesive. Before I glue the ears I wipe them with acetone to remove any surface oil. It looks like the oil was absorbed into the hair shafts from the skin.
