I'v recently heard someone speaking of "acid rot". What is this and how does it affect a hide/skin ?

what happens to a skin that was not properly neutralized - the acid just keeps on woking - sometimes for years - if a hide has acid rot it can be torn like paper and it cant be repaired - once had a customer bring me a mt lion that had acid rot - like tissue paper
caused by alum tans. over time the skin will absorb moisture and the alum (AL2O12S3) some how turns to or leaches out sulphuric acid (SO4) and causes "acid rot" I have some alum tanned skins that were never pre-pickled that will tear like wet paper. Joe
