What a properly salted hide should feel like

I have a cow hide I wish to practice thinning, tanning and oiling. I salted it twice now and it is not realy solid, yet its been in salt for 3 days now (changed the salt once), do you think it just needs to be air dry? Thanks.

It is going to take a long time for a cow hide to dry out.

does it need to sit in salt longer or just dry for a few days?

Is it dripping water?

If it is, add more salt. I doubt it is and what's happening now is that after all the water has been removed from the cell structures, the hide is still being protected by the outer layers which dry first. Just keep the hide dry and it will dry hard.

HOWEVER, in my opinion, if it's stopped dripping, it's time to put it in the pickle. No one will ever convince me that drying a hide rock hard is necessary as it must be REHYDRATED to get it back to where it already is now.
