I finished reading one of last years Jan. forums and it said you can use salt, vinegar and water for a pickle. Will it work? I know my grandmother used it for food, but animal skins before tanning? Or do you have to tan after using? Thanks Guys and Gals

It's a pickle............not a Tan!

It's a good pickling solution for short-term pickling. But - it's only a pickle and will not stabilize protein - so - yes - a tan should be used afterwards to stabilize the cape or skin.

A White Vinegar pickle is an excellent pickle to use when teaching young adults tanning. However, it does have some drawbacks. It should only be used for short-term pickling (2-3 weeks) and it can be more expensive than alternatives. Since the basic formula is:

2 Qts. of Water
2 Qts. of White Vinegar
1 Lb. of Salt

You may find yourself getting a few stares in the Supermarket! Mixing a 10 gallon pickle would require 5 Gls. of White Vinegar.

Thank You

I had a friend near Atlanta that used to do my deer capes who used a vinegar pickle...and followed up with Liquitan. I never had better stretch in my capes...and I started using the same process for everthing(substituted kwik-n-eze). I havent used any other pickle in years. But it does take alot and it is mild and difficult to stabilize the ph level.
