I have some cow hide that Im tanning just to get to know the process. After taking it out of the pickel it seems very thick (yet all the red meat and fat is gone), do cows have a extra thick skin that needs to be shaved several times if i want to make it soft after the tanning?

You are correct in seeing the hide swell and look thick. This is good. Shave again and soak, adjust Ph. Shave again, repeat, if plump the 3 or 4th time, repeat. Lots of beaming here for a fine hide.
