Water purification

We have been informed that we are getting a new source of water in our area from surface water. They will be purifying the water with Chloramine (Chlorine and Aqueous Amonia). Will this have any effect on our pickle or tanning solutions? Any help or info is greatly appreciated.

I know to check the pH and the salt content. Those are obvious. I need to know if the chemicals namely the Amonia is going to have an ill effect on the chemicals. Besides, aren't you the guy that thinks it is ok to leave the membrane on a skin and stil get a good tan.

Chloramine

The chlorine is the same old disinfectant. The ammonia is added to reduce corrosion in older pipe systems. This means it resists acidity. Both chlorine and ammonia don't stay in a solution very long. They break down chemically into other stuff. So you can do what the aquarium hobbiests do and let the water sit for 24+ hours,or boil it, or agitate/stir to remove chloramine. Oh. And of course chloramine is safer, cheaper, and more envirionmentally acceptable for the water authority. But with the strength of tanning solutions, the chloramine in the water base should have no effect.

Thank You

for the information. That is exactly what I wanted to know Mr. Duckfeathers! LOL! I had a suspicion that it would probably be better than what we are getting now. Our water comes from a limstone aquifer that is super hard. I never really have a problem with our tanning chemistry but I have heard that the softer water is better for tanning.
