Does alum in the pickel help set hairs?

I am tanning my own bear hide, and I had heard that a few pounds of alum in with the pickel will help set the hairs firm on a hide that may otherwise loose some of its fur, has anyone heard of this before?

You can use 1 oz per gallon to help set the hair. It will help tighten the hair if needed. If your skin is in good shape you may not need it, but on questionable skins I would.
