I pickled an elk cape (Safetee acid+ 1 lb salt/gallon) for 48 hrs, removed and shaved, and placed back in pickle for 24 hrs. While nuetralizing, I noticed copious amounts of small white pieces of skin (mostly noticable on the hair). Is this normal?

happens to me also. I dont know if it is fat that is released when you shave or small peaces of hide. It happens with all the tanns i use. It has never caused me a problem and will just brush out when you brush the mount.
And it is normal.
for your responses!
any way to avoid this? Anyone?
That fat leeches from within the skin as much as it does from the outside and the lanolin is naturally occurring in the hair. Washing before tanning sets up problems with pH so you might be wise not to fool with Mother Nature.
