.... At a commercial tanner wil run you somewhere around $10 a square foot, plus shipping to and from. You will have to do the fleshing, salting, wrestling and shipping! The last ones I did I charged $17.50 per foot, the next ones will be $20!
I just got one back from the tannery, 28 sq ft. I paid $280.00 at $10.00 a sq ft plus $18.25 shipping. I'm with Old Fart, going up to $20. a sq ft this year.
Well... Tanning a buffalo hide is a bigger job than you may think. First, the hides are extremely thick and shaving them is like training for the Olympics. I would give him a price that is flexible, just tell him a price range from your minumum to something considerably higer. Then, charge him based on your time and effort, because you probably can already ballpark the materials.
Hope this Helps.
Also, call some tanneries and see what they charge. Maybe you could send it out and still make a few bucks, and still be able to feel your arms when it is all said and done.
and they are a bear to handle - but it can be done - i only tanned them for mounting not soft tan for rug
