orange button on left= much knowledge grasshopper
Figured I would learn something too, and typed Bruce, tan for deer rugs here is a couple that I found and from what I gather, any tan that is good for mounts, is good for rugs, just more work.
Bruce,
Could you tell me if you can use the same tanning techniques on a deer cape as well as a skin for a rug? If not what types do I need to learn.
Thanks Lance!

You can use the same tanning techniques, but obviously when you mount the cape, you dont have to consider softness, but for a rug you do! So in that sense, you have to oil and either work the skin for a rug soft by hand, or use a 6' Tumbler and sawdust to do it for you. I also highly recommend using EZ-100 for doing rug work. Since its washable, it holds up better under circumstances where it may be damp or liquids spill onto it. Its difficult to wash out! And if it gets too dirty, they can always wash it in lukewarm water using a mild detergent.
and then there is this And alot of it. By more then just Mr.Rittel but I just copied his because it was there. This person was asking about hair loss on a deer rug
You can only slow it down!

Unfortunately, WT deerskins make poor throw pieces. Because of their hollow hair, they are not suited to be used where they will recieve wear - like over the back of a chair or as a rug. With age, and drying, the hair has a habit of snapping off and shedding - it cant be stopped - but it can be slowed down if you use a liquid lanolin spray on the hair. The Lanolin is non-drying and keeps the hair flexible! This happens no matter how good or what type of tan was used to tan it! If you cant find such a spray locally - contact us at Rittels Tanning Supply. It's listed in our on-line website pricelist!
Good luck
