Dry preservative on mounting lifesize raccoons

Submitted by Matthew on 10/2/05 at 10:02 AM. ( fishandffurs@hotmail.com ) 69.153.61.7

I have a client that wants to purchase a raw frozen green raccoon skin of me to do a lifesize mount with. He wants to use dry preservative on this. I really do not know if this is the right way to go with this ? He knows little or nothing about tanning. Should I tell him that if he does not want to pickle a hide. I said his best bet would be to send out his skin for tanning to someon who is expierenced. He also mentioned using liuqa tan on this skin ? I have heard of this kind of tan butI really Am not sure how that works ? I myself use the Ez 100 by Bruce Rittel and Lutan F for all of my tanning. I do not want him to buy it then have not know anything about this and mess it up then complain about it and say its my fault ?

Let him DP it

I still DP coons and foxes and they're still around as long as some of my tanned stuff. I'd bet anyone that I never suffer the percentages of "slippage" by using DP as they do by tanning small game.

either way...

Home tan, commercial tan, or powder, it still needs to be degreased very well. Anyone who says otherwise IS incorrect! George has been dusting skins for a long time, I dont, but he has his success to show for it. Its probably more a matter of preference.

ABSOLUTELY degrease

And with DP, that cannot EVER be overstressed.

I will tell him, thanks George

I will tell my client that dry preservative will do the job and that he really should degrese it and he should also keep it away from moths, flies and other insects.

Thanks

Matthew

No more than you should do the same Matthew

DP is no more susceptable to dermistids than tanned hides, sometimes less. After all, DP contains borax which kills insects. Tanned hides don't have anything.

the biggest difference is...

Truly leatherized skins have very little natural protiens left in them, and are less atractive to insects.
