what is in a brain that tans a hide?

Hey guys this website has helpd me a bunch and i've ordered the ez100 kit from Bruce , very nice guy buy the way. But i was explaing brain tanning to a friend (i've never done it) and relized i have no idea what is in the brain that causes the hide to tan. Is it protein or what? Thanks for explaing in advance.

im by no means an expert. but i believe its the acid and the high fat content of the brain material, plus as i understand tons of the tanners elbow grease. im sure some one on here will know more. maybe they will chime in too.

brains don't tan

The brains are just an emulsified oil. Once you get good brain penetration, the oils allow you to soften the skin with a lot of elbow grease. The now soft hide is not tannned! It is basically softened rawhide until you smoke it. The chemicals in the smoke tan the hide and makes it washable.
