Fresh Tan?

Submitted by Bobby on 11/25/05 at 11:18 PM. ( )

When buying tanned hides for mounting, how RECENT does the tan need to be? What if the hide was tanned a year ago?

Help me out here guys.

Thank you

.....Anything tanned more than 6 months to a year ago. In any case you need to KNOW where it was tanned. That way you can contact the tanner about the specific instructions they might recommend for rehydrating the skin/cape for mounting. I've had good luck with capes tanned by Carolina Fur that were well over two years old, so there are exceptions. I've also had skins from unknown tanners fall apart when rehydrated.

A lot depends on what kind of guarantee the seller will give you. AND the reputation of the seller for standing behind what they are selling you.

They're wet tanned capes and have been in the freezer. Shouldn't have any problems then.
