Hi, I was wondering if anyone has ever dyed (or attempted to) dye a pelt that you tanned? Does any company make dyes specifically for the home-tanner to use? I did some experimentation on a couple of squirrel hides (used peroxide for bone-whitening and I got a strawberry blonde sqirrel, and then I used some burgundy hair dye I had purchased to color my own hair - I didn't like the swatch test - so I dyed a squirrel hide sort of burgundy red).
So, other than having a commercial tannery do the job, or buying human hair dye (you only get enough in one batch to do a couple of small hides like squirrels, and then the question is to dye before or after the tan....or if it makes a difference and how it reacts with the tan being used) - is there a way to permanently dye pelts without using a tannery? (there's a beauty supply near me that has some wild punk-type neon hair dyes - I'm real tempted to mount up a hot pink oppossum (right now it's normal colored and in my freezer) and put it on Ebay! But seriously - I'd like to be able to dye hides for other purposes too....

Found several fur and feather dye sellers online - thanks!
