I bought a brand new one this year. I don`t think it works. I place the big end in the brine but nothing happens. I can`t read a thing. Just what is this thing suppose to do if its working right?

and the water line is your reading
All it does is float. The scale on the tube is the water level reading. It measures the density of the water. The easiest way to do this is to scoop some of the pickle into a tall enough container so that the salinometer will float. Have you ever heard that some ships that float on the ocean will not float in fresh water? Same concept, salt water is more dense than fresh water. You may actually not even get a reading on your tanning solution because you use less salt than in the pickle.
