Question for Bruce Rittel

Submitted by Champion Tannery on 1/31/06 at 5:00 PM. ( jim@championtannery.com ) 69.128.210.198

I always skim through the paper work from Van Dykes to make sure neither of you have altered the directions or formulas after I order supplies.

I noticed today that Van Dykes has changed your recipe which reads;
"Mix 1 ounce of E-Z tan to every gallon of water. The average deer cape will take 6 gallons of water and 6 ounces of salt."

Wow, that's down to an ounce of salt per gallon! This has to be a mistake.

I look forward to your response. And as always, nothing but 100% satisfaction from your chemicals.

Typo & not Bruce

As far as I can tell and I've had Bruce's directions since I can remember it's still one ounce to a gallon of water and eight pounds of salt (opps typo LOL) 8 oz to a gallon.
I've seen this before with Van Dyke's and who ever proof reads there paper work isn't doing such a great job.
Smart that you asked about it. The only problem can be newbies trying it out for the first time and then run into problems. I just wonder will Van Dykes pay for the mix up and problems they created for their clients.
Ps. Call them on the mistake and let them know. I do know they do try and fix many problems when this occurs.

Thanks Frank

I appreciate the reply.
Yeah, I know for a while they were sending them out with the recipe consisting of 6oz of salt to each gallon. That's a little more believable, but as you mentioned still not what Bruce recommends.

It's tough when it varies like that, because ya can't help but to wonder if maybe Bruce altered his own formula to reduce the amount of salt needed.
Sticking with 8oz, thanks.

Thanks Jim!

I very much appreciate you input this error. And like Frank mentioned - Van Dyke's usually always responds when an error is made. I'm sure they meant to say "6 ozs. of salt per each 1 gallon of water used.

The Salt is really only insurance that an acidic skin wont acid swell in the tan - otherwise it hasnt any real function. Using 4-6 ounces per each 1 gallon of tanning solution is really only a safeguard - and I highly recommend using it!

I'll give a call to them and make sure it's corrected.

Much appreciated Olaus.

I hope my post wasn't taken the wrong way. I wasn't harping. Just very curious.
I had to find out directly from the horse and I knew I'd find him in here.

We all make mistakes, and I hold the utmost respect for you sir with your promptness.
Thanks again to all of you.

I sent Olaus my spindle out of my Vandyke fleshing machine, to have the bearings replaced. Olaus called me the day that he received my part, informed me of the status of it, and took care of the issue that same day. I personally want to thank Olaus Lyons for his exhalent customer service and for taking care of business. He replaced the bearings for a ridicules low price. I am impressed with his effort to help keep my fleshing machine in running condition. Thank you Olaus.
