Searched archives for an answer to a question just asked by Kyle in beginners But no answer yet. What is the optimal amount of tan (gallons)to hides can you put in a large auto tanner?

depends on the tan that you use

Each brand of tan will take a certain amount of water, salt, what ever. You have to go by the directions of the tan you are using, and figure out how many gallons + capes you can get into the tanner. Are you talking about a 16,26,36,or 45-gallon tanner? They all are different and can hold different amounts. If you use Arrowhead crystals, you can get one cape per gallon of water. Using Lutan, you need to go by the weight of hide, 5 lbs of hide needs 3.12 gallons of water and 5oz. of Lutan. Therefore, you need more water to use Lutan and have less room for hides. So to answer your question, it depends on what kind of tanning agent you use.
