How much salt do you mix with water and how long do you leave the hide to pickle?
Return to Tanning Category Menu
1lb salt per gallon of water- start with 16oz of 5%white vinegar, and add more to adjust ph to 2.5 or lower. Vinegar is cheap, but it takes alot of it. 24hr min, shave, back to pickle overnight, re-shave depending on skin thickness.
What do you mean by (shaving)do you mean fleshing
You really should read a lot more on tanning. Deer and other large game skins must be shaved thin as to get a soft tan. Shaving is thinning the skin side.
You are shaving the skin to a unifor thickness. There are thicker areas on most animals. Like around the neck and head, and on the sides of some others and down the back as well.
Fleshing is what you do before you salt the hide.
