I've heard from several people on how they rough flesh the hide and go directly into the pickle. What problems, if any, will this cause later on?

removes fluid from the skin, pickle kills bacteria that attacks skin. The more fluid left in skin the harder the pickle has to work to protect the skin from bacteria. The pickle will lose its acidity quicker. Salt is cheaper than pickleing agents, or replacement skins. I'm no expert, others on this forum feel free to chime in.
id say always salt under almost any circumstances after taking off head and turning ears, nose etc.
but
there are things that are beginning to change the way i look at it now
first stop rot has changed the equation
and second the brine acid soak for 30 min.at a ph of 5.5 to 6
and the outcome of that has also changed things
the first time i did not salt up front i felt like i was cheating
then to add to my guilt i did not pickle for three days shave and put it back in the pickle shave again and tan
i just rubbed Jrts on it waited overnight and mounted
now that felt like sacrilege
well the world did not stop turning and the skin felt like a submersible product with the stretch of a raw skin
how could this be i said and thought
well Glen Conely quite frankly is making life a whole lot easier on the home tanning these days
and im sure glad George led me to Jrts
i had to pinch myself to see if i was dreaming yesturday
took a cape off the head and mounted it the next day
wow life is good
now if got a few mounted up like this and the shrinkage after mounting is minimal ,the color loss minimal and everything i would hope to get from a good tan
keep jumping through hoops if you want im not
