I would like to know, what tanneries are using to break up tanned hides? What type of oil, are they using? What equiptment are they using to soften hides? I am tanning some elk hides.

There are many good oils. Look at the top of this page, and click on suppliers. Then click on suppliers with websites. A little past half-way throgh that categorie, you will find Knoblocks, and Rittels. Your oils will be there. Here comes the hard part. Soft hides- equiptment involved- 1. good pickle and tannage 2. a good job of shaving 3. kickers 4. sawdust drums 5. stakers 6. the know-how to use this equiptment. The kicker might be the only thing that might be taken away from this equiptment list, and still produce a SEMI-soft hide. My definition of soft might be different from others.
