Different species in same bucket of Krowtann?

Submitted by Chris on 6/23/06 at 11:52 AM. ( ) 63.65.68.246

Is there any problem with having different species, say 2 raccoon skins and a coyote in the same bucket of Krowtann for 3-4 days? Also, can I reuse the Krowtann mixture I just used to tan 2 woodchucks for 4 days, or should I throw it out and start over? Thanks in advance.

for the correct answer, call the number on the bottle. someone may be stretching the limits of the mix and tell you a incorrect answer.

coon krowtann for one and coyote krowtann for the other - unsafe to mix animals - they might mate and god knows what would happen in that acid bath - migh get a raccyote- dont reuse krowtann unless you mixed up way too much for first animal - i have asked ozark woods this exact ?

Just out of curiousity, how many animals do you mount in a year? Acid bath? Way too much for the first animal? Wouldnt that cause an acid swell condition for the first skin, and probablly the second? I didnt see a mention of salt. If he mixed up too much for the first skin, and followed the directions, with the correct ammount of salt, should he be ok for a second skin? Probablly so. My opinion, without a shaving machine, and a good shave job, he is getting nothing but a surface tan.

i mount 150-200hundred a year

most of my answer was tongue in cheek - right over your head right?
i have experimented with krowtann as much as anyone (remember i'm the poster child for the product)
some of my observations:
1) i can mix up a slug of this stuff and as long as i calculate how many animals this 'slug' will handle as long as that amount is not exceeded i can keep throwing them in the same vat until the 'magic' is gone
2) on the animals i do a lot of i can tell pretty much to the hour how long it takes to tan (or at least set hair)
3) salt wasn't mentioned because i am reasonably sure he followed the instructions
4) as long as you are willing to leave the skin in the tan forever sahving is a waste of time - but that alone doesn't mean you will be able to mount the animal so shaving plays an important part in being able to get stretch and speeding up tanning - tanning from my experience can come thru the hair side too - shaving the flesh side just speeds everything up
5) tanning for me is just a means to an end - being able to shave the skin easilly - it also lets me turn ears on small mammals easilly - if i could do everything with dp i would - too many problems in summer with tumbling dp's animals - i am not convinced tanning does a significantly better job than dp but IT DOES make my job easier

Poster child remark- more of joke than anything. If your doing that many mounts a year, I think you are loosing money. Do you have an employee or two? If your doing your own tanning, and mounting, you must be missing out on alot of life free time.

THIS CROW TAN CRAP IS NOT WHAT ITS CRACKED UP TO BE. ITS VERY HARSH AND DETRAMENTAL TO A SKIN. I have now had skins that was tanned when it first came out and now I rehydrated a skin to mount and it fell APART JUNK!All it is is something to be use for drain cleaning...
