A friend bought a sheep skin to make seat covers for our motorcycles. The wool side is an orangy hue. Is there some way I can lighten it without damaging the skin?

You can use basic white and 40vol hydrogen peroxide. Mix to a thin paste and rub it into the fur side. Brush out after it's dry. Then, it can be dyed any color you want.
