taxidermist and fur tanners, always use naptha instead of mineral spirits. naptha will cut the grease as well or better, and has an additive that shines the fur like crazy. It also helps preserve the leather for decades. Conversely Mineral spirits will over dry and make the hairs/furs look like dullsville!

Naphta WAS the choice back in those days. Your advice is solid, however. I do hope the younger guys will be smart enough to see what the fumes have done to your brain and select a safer alternative that the TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY dictates.

someone's shop burn down not too long back by adding naptha to sawdust and sticking it in a cloths dryer to tumble bird skins? I belive it was in IN but can't quite remember.

Thats fume damage! Most times I will use dawn dish liquid or castrol super clean. I still use mineral spirits on turkeys which is the only bird I mount. But lil'ej please come up with a new name so I won't be getting any more calls at home asking me if I have lost my mind.
