I brought home an untanned, fallow deer hide from the taxidermy shop where I work. I tanned the hide using the Van-dyke's Syn-Oil Tanning kit. I followed all the instructions and did everything right, and let the hide dry for the right amount of time.
However, the hide still smells strongly (VERY strongly) like tanning oil and some kind of musky-type smell. Its not a nice combination of scents. The underside of the hide was already shaved thin when I brought it home, so I don't think its grease or anything making it smell.
I currently have the hide hanging in the garage, and it is stinking up the garage now. What should I do to de-odorize it?

cover the hide in baking soda hair side up for 1 week to absorb the smell and leave the hide scentless!
