I was tanning a couple of deer skins and ran into a prob of light slippage on one hide. My process had advanced well into the pickle-tannage phase but i decided to try something.
The slipping pelt was pulled and neutralize w/ Na Bicarb to a pH around 5.5 - 6.0 then put BACK into a liming bath. Lime bath consisted of a little salt (NaCL) and 10 grams / liter Na Sulfide. Theory says the Alkali and tanning agent (Lutan F) would not mix well together...
This morning checked the liming pelt and already the hair has pulped. Will leave over the weekend and delime monday. When handling the touch is that of regular limed 'feel' as for buckskin and see nothing abnormal. Plan to continue processing as for buckskin and see how it comes out. (I would rather have a decent piece of buckskin as opposed to a patchy slipped dressed fur)
Anyone ever try something crazy like this?

What the hell are you trying to prove?
Basic chemistry is not one of your strengths I can tell. An acid pickle (low pH) to a neutral (6.0 to 7.0) and then to an alkali (like 12 to 14)? This makes absolutely no sense to a good end product in either. Of course Lutan and alkali don't mix, THEY NEUTRALIZE EACH OTHER. If you wanted buckskin, why didn't you use the alkali to get rid of the hair and THEN TAN? If you're looking for a hair-on tan, the VERY LAST THING you want is to get alkali into your mix or have the pH ever go above 2 in the pickle, 4 in the tanning and 6-7 in the neutralize.
First of all. I prob have more 'basic' understanding of Chemistry in my thumb than u do in u entire body. Bird-brain.
Second of all. I am well versed in all aspects of the Leather Fabrication Process, sire George. If fact without a doubt I fabricate more 'leather' in one month than you have (or will) perhaps in your lifetime. (That is if u have ever actually made leather)
Third. Oops I forgot..this a forum for those who know everything all ready therefore why ask a question here? humm. (By George! if I could only be so smart like u!)
Fourth. I have read many numermous posts (taxidermy.net) and there is always (without fail)some Armchair furrier philosophical (pH)unny guy slashing another to ribbons when they ask a question. (my if those guys could be as godly as you.
Fifth. Read more post again and you will see (try this time w/ your glasses on) that since I was in a hurry (making many many pieces of 'real' leather ) <the fur thing is a 'hobby' for me> I WAS ALREADY IN THE TANNING PHASE THEN PULLED THE HIDE WHEN SLIPPING WAS VERY NOTICABLE.
Sixth. Thanks but I do not need the pH educational course 'basic 101' George.
Seventh. Try to keep an open mind George and dont fall into a narrow way of thinking. Nothing ventured / nothing gained.
... did u read the part that said EXPERIMENT? I think it was at the very top.
If the final product is Chitt..oh well. It is a TRIAL and even from bad TRIALS i have learned a thing or two in life..
Good for us Edison didnt have that way of thinking..or we all would be in the dark.
Yea, Georgey Pargey. Your always telling everyone on here to stick the ORANGE button. So as not to repeat any and all & sometimes valuable information.
I say "type away" and repeat the good information.
You are repeating what he already said, "lutan and base don't mix".
The man already said that, why repeat it.
And you tell me i crawled in a chitt hole and pulled the lid back on it. Everything you say about another just turn that crooked finger around to point on you. Maybe i'm as full a chitt as you are. but i am for progress and not always making people think they have no future like you. The man said it was an experiememnt. Just accept the post for what it is. Do you always have to promote strife? Why don't you get a good dog and take up rabbit hunting. then come back on here and tell us your experiences. We here on the forum and in the rest of the world don't really hate you as much as you may think. But your use of capitol letter is pretty anoying.
ej
Shame you two are playing STUD. ej, tell him to use naphta on it and it will cure his problems. And Gatorbait, if you're making leather, make leather. You may know a lot about pH (though that's certainly under advisement with your initial post), but you obviously don't have a clue about the biology necessary to make it happen. Get ej's phone number and you can both numb each other up sufficiently to play chess with an ant. OH, and ej, I wouldn't THINK OF USING CAPITALS ON YOUR NAME. There's a real EJ out there who was born with a full brain.
George Roof Blown Off. Your postings give me a great laugh on here. Irregardless of that fact your postings have walked on the testamony of good peoples whose tails and experiences are irreplaceable and the damage you have caused, sometimes irreparable and that is irremediable, sir. Your jargon, guff and your irruptions are only but minor irritations to me. I am irrepressible in saying I find you irresponsible, irregular, irreverent and just plain irrelevant.
You'd better rely on verbalizations rather than writing words you don't comprehend. Is "irregardless" like "unthaw"? I suffer fools badly and one who passes information that poses risk or danger to those not knowing better is one I find to be a bigger fool.
What is the experiment?
Has the hide been shaved or split yet?
Aluminum chloride will not bind to the collagen fibers at 12.0, pHunny that you try :). It will leach back out in to your lime bath. When you go to delime you will wash out all the Lutan. Retanning or oiling at that point, after bating, will still give you a soft hide.
What end point are you trying to acheive? A soft buckskin?
Ever heard of 'soap tanning'? If you have you surely know that it's the oils and elbow grease that make it soft, not necessarily the order of process.
If you make as much leather as you say you do, do you do anything with zircon? How much chrome retan work do you run? What's your primary market? You know, auto, shoe upper, upholstery...
Are you ISO certified, etc. The more U share the better we can help you.
yes, unthaw, like in antarctica by placing out of doors. i stand by it. you can't save everybody from harm by simply telling them to try nothing.
do nothing, say nothing, like you.
my instuctions for using naptha are safe. well ventilated area. with warm water. as per the instructions. no body with your IQ would be trying tanning anyway im sure.
Shaved? Split? My Market? Aluminum Chloride? A Soft bucksin?.
"zircon" ...do u mean Zirconium? Not for me.
Chrome retan... not needed. + can be bad for effluent if u r trying to keep your wastes segregated. I love being green..how bout u Mr. "-"?. Better yet..how have things been going with YOUR market old friend?
Lao-tzu: "Those who know do not say; those who say do not know"
Man you are right..make a little post and like stepping into a mine field around here. haha. Its all good.
I will let u know mid-end next week how my Chitty experiment turns out.
:)
