to make semi soft hide without fleshing?

It will get very soft. The hair will also fall out and the skin will begin to rot. All red meat has to be removed from a hide before anything is done to it. Tanning alone will not make a hide soft. It still has to be "broken" by tumbling or beaming to get it soft.
