Oily residue

Submitted by Angelo on 10/12/99. ( )

I have a deer skin which I tanned a while back using the Auto Tanner
and I placed the oil in the tanning solution. The skin tanned very nicley
but the hair has a very sticky feel to it from the oil left on it.
I don't really have a tumbler large enough to clean up the skin.
So I was wondering if I could possibly wash it in a soapy solution and
then tumble it with saw dust to get it dry??.
Thanks for your help.

Try this - Fill a bag 1/3rd full of sawdust and add some "Odorless Mineral Spirits" to it. Its called Paint Brush Cleaner around here. Use it straight. Then place the skin or cape in it, tie it off, bounce it around a little, then blow and shake it off. It should clean up very nicely! By the way - I dont use oil in the tan.

Thank You

Thanks for the advice, I was experimenting with the machine
and tried it with the oil. I'll let you know how it turns out.
