buckskinning caribou hides

Submitted by Chad Gerlach on 10/12/99. ( kuskokid@hotmail.com )

I am trying to buckskin some caribou hides. I've used lime to dehair the skins, and was told I need to "bait" them to replace what the lime leached out. What is the best way to do this? Also, what is the best product for tanning the hides? I've used liquatan for mounts, will it work for tanning leather for sewing? Will liquatan work for tanning hides with the hair on if they are to be used for clothing? or is there a better product.

Yes you can Bate the skins with a product called Blood X,
Bating will give you a better softer piece of leather, and will
remove the hard spots. Yes you can sew on a piece of skin
after it has been Liqua Tanned.Contact me and I can help you
more with this, plus I have some further questions for you.
