Fleshing for buckskin

Submitted by Bob on 10/22/99. ( )

Are there any differences in the method of fleshing/preparation of a hide (specifically an elk back hide) to be tanned hair off? Also, do most large tanneries provide this service? I usually use AFD in Houston, TX.

There's not much difference in fleshing and preparing a hide for leather or hair-on! Of course you may want to trim away the head area since it will be unusable leather, so that saves turning the ears and splitting the lips, and paring the nose. Also trim away 1/2 of the legs. One note - DONT send a tannery a scarred skin or ones with big blow-away holes in them. Its a waste of your money. Some tanneries charge by the square foot so why pay for unusable leather? You can contact Sebring Custom Tanning for prices and info. Its another source you. Telephone # (863) 655-1600
