How long should I let my hides sit in the pickel bath before starting the tan? Also should I let the hide dry before I start to tan.
thank you

Joe-
What are you picklng? Generally I will leave deer
in the pickle for 2 days, shave them, and then
return them for another day.
In general, to check whether your skins are ready
to tan,pinch the thickest part of the skin between
your thumb and forefinger to check plumpness;
if the depression that you make in the skin
rebounds and disappears in a few seconds, it's not
ready to tan. When the depression stays in the skin
then the pickle has worked its way all through the
skin and you can go on to your tanning process.

Joe-
I missed part of the question-
DO NOT dry hides between pickling and tanning.
If you can't tan right away, leave them in the pickle!
If you maintain your ph below 2.0, they can stay in
there indefinitely. I have had skins in a pickle
for several months before and still mounted them without
problems-as long as the ph was watched carefully!!!

Mike is giving good advice!

Mike is giving you good advice - keep them in the pickle until they have firmed and plumped well for shaving - I normally leave everything 3 days or longer - that way its pickled thoroughly for sure! Do not let the hide dry before you neutralize and tan - keep it wet and soft. The pickle is definately a safe place to keep the hide until you are ready to tan. Just check the ph ( below a 2.0) and stir it occasionally. Skins will safely stay good for 6-12 weeks there.
