Polar Bear (Yellow/White???)

Submitted by ZT on 12/4/99. ( )

We have a polar bear to mount. The fur (like many polar bears) shows a lot of yellow. The customer (like many customers) believes a polar bear should be (polar) white.

Any suggestions appreciated???

Suck it up and bleach it. Tel him how the agents can make the hair brittle. JohnC

Polar Bears are white!

Polar Bears are white with a black epidermis. The yellow that you commonly see in live Polars is the result of Seal Oil and fat, their favorite food. Unfortunately it oxidizes and creates that yellow look. Mud and minerals in mud also contribute to some coloring. John C is right - you'll have to bleach it back. And after bleaching wash the fur with a good conditioner to lend some softness and to avoid leaving it brittle.
