Absolutely new..would like to try tanning deer hide

Submitted by Scott D on 11/29/99. ( )

Guys... I just got my 1st deer and would like to do something with the hide as a
keepsake. Although vague, my question is...Where do I begin? I was told to
put rock salt on it to draw out all the moisture, and that is what I have done
so far (just tonight). Where do I go from here? I would like to wind up with something
I can hang on the wall (even encased in a frame would do..) Any help would
be greatly appreciated!!!

Get a hold of Bruce Rittel he will steer you in the right direction. I buy all my tanning supplies from him. He has a web site on the taxidermy net under suppliers. Good luck, Mark

Rock Salt is WRONG

This response submitted by Dan R on 12/2/99. ( deerstuffer@hotmail.com )

Do Not use rock salt. It's to big. Use fine grain non-iodized salt. Salt for one day, shake off, salt again and let set for a day or two then shake it off and hang it to dry. It will dry very hard. like the others siad check with BRUCE OR READ THE ARCHIVES HERE AND YOU WILL FIND ALL THE ANSWER.
