Submitted by Danny Gabbard, Sr. on 6/18/99. ( PYBuck130@aol.com )

Hey Folks.....

I have recently made the decision to go to commercially tanned hides for my mounts.

For those of you who may use commercially tanned hides in your mounting, what is your method of rehydrating the hide???

Thanks aheady of time!!!

Danny

The safest way - particularly if you have no idea how it was tanned or with what, is to mix up some water, and add 1 handful of Salt per 1 gallon used. It weighs out to 4 Ozs. per handful usually. Soak the tanned skin or cape in this for 30 minutes and then place it in a plastic bag and tie it off - refrigerate it overnight, and the next day it should be nice and relaxed, ready to prep and mount. This method eliminates worrying about acid swelling too! The small amount of salt suppresses that effect.
