Freeze before tanning

Submitted by Garrett on 4/8/99. ( )

As a beginning taxidermist I have a ton of questions, but I will not ask them all now for the sake of everyone's sanity. I would like to know one thing however, can I freeze a specimen whole before skinning without doing damage to the hide? I ask this for two reasons. One, I read that freezing will kill any bugs that may be in the hide, and two I do not always have time right after obtaining a specimen. Thank you for any help that you can provide.

Freezing is what you want to do when you don't have time to skin it out. Good luck in your taxidermy adventures.

Hello Garret, Yes definetly freeze your specimen if you cannot get to it rite away.
Care must be given when freezing all specimans though, There are many ways to do it, I usually wrap mine in news paper and seal in plastic bags with tape real good.Be carefull to protect claws or any protrusions that might get broke.GOOD LUCK
