Where to get a deer hide tanned?

Submitted by Ralph on 11/12/1998.

I got a decent buck with my bow and have decided to make a set of buckskins. Could any one suggest a good place to send my hide and the approximate cost and turnaround time. I realize this may be a 3 or 4 year project because I want to use hides from deer I harvest. Please e-mail me as well as posting here. I just found this sight and it may take me a while to get back to it. Thanks.

BIll, did you know that W.B. Place won't give you your skin back if they dye it? They do a pretty nice job of tanning, but for the people who want their own skins, like Ralph and about every customer we have, it causes a problem. Actually, if you want to save up skins you probably should get them all tanned natural, then get them all dyed at the same time. If you look close you will see that there is slight color differences from year to year, even lot to lot with the same tannery. Keith

It's Worse Than That

It goes further. I spoke with a lady at the company, and she explained it this way. All hair-off skins come back in a natural, un-dyed color they refer to as "pearl". If you want a batch dyed to order, they no longer offer this service. What you will do is excange your hides for their stock color hides. It is a varied palette of colors for sure. It is also a little costly: $1.50 additional per square foot. These terms are on the inside back page of their latest catalog. Times being what they are, things change. As for the selection of garments they make from skins, that has changed for the better! They have a huge selection of items!!

huh?

I understand John but Kieth, I didnt read you right on not getting it back, I assume you mean 'not the same one ' I always tell guys to send the skins for colors together but it still doesnt mean they go through as a batch together. I really have never heard a negative from my customers about WB but maybe they just went with natural, that seems to be the syle lately. Theres a place right near me by about an hour that has an awesome following. They will make stuff from your skins, swap you for product, or just sell outright. Naples Creek Leather, in case anyone is wondering. Well, I hope you two guys clarification will help Ralph make his choice.

Yes that's what I meant, you won't get your own skin back. You will get "A" skin of comparable size in the color you ask for. Keith

Exactly why you should do it yourself.

All of the above is exactly why I tan my own skins with brains. For clothing, buckskin is paramount. Chemical tans are near to worthless, except for biker jackets and the like. Braintan is also infinitely cheaper. For more info on the process, go to www.braintan.com and have some fun looking there. You really can't go wrong.
