Elk Hide Ideas?

Submitted by JT on 12/30/1998. ( )

I am looking for any ideas to "show off" my first elk kill. Does anybody have any ideas to utilize the hide? I am getting it tanned by a professional.

Show Off!

Hi JT, don't know how to tell you to do it, but I can tell you what not to do! Don't put it in any situation where it will get walked on, sat on, petted or get handled to any great degree, or you will soon have a bald Elk skin. The hair on Elk is brittle, and won;t take much handling without breaking off. Keith

Depends on your tastes.

If you are going to keep the hair on, a wall hanging is about the only
option, though you can occassionally use it as a blanket when you're
feeling particularly primitive.

If you are taking the hair off, the sky's the limit. A rifle sock or
scabbard is nice. Same with a bowcase: make a wooden frame, like a
canoe, and tack the leather over it. A purse for the wife, a jacket
for yourself, a belt or two, sheaths for your favorite knives, a hatchet
cover, ad infinitum.

I would suggest you save yourself the hassle and ship it to me.

I have just finished going through the process of tanning my first Elk Hide. I am going to make two drums out of hide.
