I'm a scoutmaster of a troop of boys and we would like to make some coyote skin mountain man hats. Can anyone help us out by sending information on how to make at hat etc? The ones with the face in front and the tail in back are cool. The full drape hats are what we are looking to make.
Thanks,
Ray

Ray, Look in the archives 'SEARCH' under fur hats or caps . I think I saw two different patterns for coon skin hats there.

As Diana told you, click on the "BEGINNERS" icon to the left. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the list and then click on "SEP 99". Scroll down that list to 9/27/99 and read "coonskin cap".
The "drape hats" you speak of weren't really caps. They were simply furs draped over the head. You cut off the front paws, sew the ends together, fold the face down over the seam and tack it to the front legs. That "cup" created by the bent skin then just rode on your forehead. In windy, cold weather, the back legs were tied around the neck and the hide then covered your ears.
Your help and responses are greatly appreciated. I'll look and see if I can find those posts in the archives.
Thanks,
Ray
