I just completed Glen's 10 day course up in Surrey,B.C. which is about 5 miles from the U.S. border. Since others may be interested in doing the same, I thought relating my experience might be beneficial to someone else.
My training cost $2600 plus an additional $200 per week for room and board. He also offers a 3 day course which goes for $950 and a 5 day one for $1500 IF I remember correctly. The room and board was comparative bargain as the cheapest hotel/motel was $89.00 per night.
Having experience some training under 3 other taxidermist prior over the last 20 years or so, I feel somewhat qualified to express an opinion.
We typically started somewhere between 9 & 10 a.m. and generally worked to at least 10:30 p.m. and as late as 1:30 a.m. After a few days, I certainly got "birded " out! One of the main differences between Glen and the others is his emphasis on recording a multitude of measurements on the bird both before and after skinning. After that, a drawing is made of the bird. During the mounting process, he is absolutely fanatical about getting everything just right. "Good Enough" are words he never utters. And though he is a perfectionist, he is also a patient teacher who doesn't become frustrated no matter what errors a poor student may make.
It also should be noted that monting birds is much more than an occupation with Glen. He is comsumed by birds. Evidence of this abounds in his library, his video selection, his aviary and the fact that he is an amaeteur pilot. Should science ever advance to where man can wear wings, I'm sure he'd be the first to sign up.
The reason I chose Glen was that I felt he was much more scientific in his approach and that my chances for subsequent success would be much greater as a result.
Overall, I am very happy and satisfied with my experience and would highly recommend him.
