i am trying to find out what to do with a coon tail to presevere it. i just shot it and cut off it't tail and all i know is that you put salt in it. ok, then what? ihave heard sun, no sun? i have seen pull out fat and cartilage, no don't do it. i understand that the fat is what stinks so that makes sense. i do know to wear gloves. i am a nurse but definitely a city girl even though i don't reside there anymore. i am still getting used to my husbands way of living. He just can't remember anything but the salt. Thanks

The bone has to come out. If the tail is already removed from the coon take a sharp knife / scalpel and cut the skin from the base down to the tip of the tail then skin out the tail bone and scrape out the flesh / fat then salt and let dry. That will be sufficient unless you wanted it to be soft and flexable, if you do it will have to be tanned and softened. Becareful down by the tip, the skin is thinner and will tear easily.
