Green-Winged Teal
From Issue 57 of Breakthrough Magazine, this Green-Winged Teal photo was submitted by Breakthrough publisher Larry Blomquist of Louisiana. According to Field Guide of North American Birds, by the Audubon Society, "The green-winged teal is a small, darkish duck. The male has a chestnut head, a flashing green speculum, pale gray sides, and a pinkish breast with a vertical stripe down the side. The female is dark brown without distinctive markings.
"Green-winged teals are among the fastest flying ducks and are therefore popular gamebirds. They wheel in compact flocks, like shorebirds. They are hardy, being among the the last ducks to reach their winter habitat in fall, and the first to depart in spring."
