What is the best way to create blood on a whitetail shoulder mount with an arrow inserted? Thanks in advance.

I will keep my opinion on the style of your mount to myself as you didn't ask for an opinion. You will hear crickets waiting for help as most don't approve of mounts of this type. Goes in the same category as animals in traps. Before you ask about the last part of my comment Yes i'm a trapper and wear that title proudly but I also don't rub it in peoples faces. JMO good luck.

I'll be honest I am not a fan of the mount, I have a good customer that harvested his largest archery buck and it's what he wanted. My job as his taxidermist is to give him what he wants as far as type of mount. I personally have not done one like it and came on here for advice how to do it and make it look right. I dont believe I was trying to rub it in anyone's face. There are alot of talented taxidermists on this forum that I have alot of respect for and have learned a lot from and have a hard time believing that this offends any of them and sure a big portion has done such a mount. And as far as animals mounted in traps I think it's awesome, there is nothing wrong with reliving the memory, I guess that's what keeps taxidermists in business.

A full body mount with the arrow depicting a hit to the vitals would be about the only thing I would ever attempt to recreate. Anything else with an arrow in the neck-shoulder area is nothing but a display of a poor marksman or someone whoring out the services to appease a client that thinks it looks cool. I'll pass...just like I do with someone wanting a neck mount on a whitetail.

Buckhunter15...Your not gonna "hear crickets" for heaven sake!! I'd answer your question if I had the answer, but I've not done one. Someone has an answer for you. Crittrstuffr....thanks for keeping your opinion to your self;) Come on GWebb "whoring out services"....so your saying you'd "whore out" your services for a "hit to the vitals" but you wouldn't whore out your services for neck or shoulder shot. What's the difference, other than shot placement?? Both have arrows sticking out of the animal??o_O By the way, I've killed a few deer with a shoulder shot:) And..... I find it hard to look a photos of animails in traps....I still mount them.

There are several easy recipes on youtube. I made some once using a mixture of elmer’s glue, red paint and a tad of brown or black to tone it down a bit. And come to think of it, I may have added a bit of flour to the mix to help give it substance and better color once the glue dries.

I think the man is just asking for advice on how to create a mount, not asking for a lecture on whether to do the mount or not! Thats his business not ours.

Never one to hold my opinion, I don't intend to start now. As a taxidermist, your mantra should be in bringing animals back to life and not showcasing the act that brought them to your shop. Remember, your work is not only going to be viewed by Bubba and his buddies and even Bubba can't take the heat sometimes when the family jumps on him.
I did one in my entire 60 years. I whored myself out since I didn't have any money but it was my very last one. Though the guy thought it was great, I caught a raft of crap from his wife and ultimately, he came back to have it "repaired" as his friends and family all got on him intensely. Still, we all learn by our mistakes and if you elect to put your hand in the fire, I'm not about to stop you.

An easy way is to use acrylic artists paint. Use the red, alizarin crimson, and brown out of the tubes . Turn your mount so that the "wound" is flat and place dollops of paint where you want them, tinting by steaking in the other 2. On your first coat, clip the hair and make sure the coat reaches the skin. It will dry overnight. Then place your heavier dollops and allow them to dry for several days before touching.

I agree with George. Since I kinda got called out on stating my opinion let me share it. The form had better be one of two ways IMO to be correct. A full sneak cause the deer I have shot with an arrow where at Mach 4 halling azz with there head straight out or you could use a semi upright and lay it sideways like he's on the ground. In my opinion most of the blood is coming out the lower exit hole. Of course double lung hit it can be coming out both entrance and exit but it happens fast I'm not good enough to see which happens first. At impact there seems to be very little blood. Once again Just My Opinion. Either way I hope your customer and yourself are happy with the outcome. As stated before good luck with it.

I have seen 2 or 3 mounted like this and didnt like either one, hell who knows maybe I can talk him out of it. Thanks for all the input I appreciate it. George your opinion is what makes this a great place which I also appreciate.

When ever someone calls or comes in requesting something I really don't want to do I just price that option sky high and only rarely do they want me fo do it. For something like this, I'd charge at least $500 to make it go away.

Yep, that's what I said. But then again I know I probably will never be doing a full size Whitetail mount because last time I quoted a price the guy about fainted. But to those that do them....more power to you. I have just always thought the few mounts I did see with an arrow sticking out of them looked very tacky. As previously stated above, we try to recreate the animal as it was alive. I've seen the backpack mounts that I like, the hanging ducks and toms that I also like. But the arrow out of the neck just doesn't never has and never will look good to me. If someone ever wants one done by me my advice would be I'll mount the animal in what pose you want and you stick whatever you want in or on it when you get it home.

He thinks it's a great idea. Problem will be, as Geo said, that no one else will like it and it will probably be brought back at some point to make it look right. Sooo many other insanely good mount ideas to be considered to show off that buck. Shoulder arrow = bad shot.

Look around on this site, or others like it for movie prop type blood effects. https://www.monstermakers.com/blood-and-flesh-tone-colorants/

Bla Bla Bla, he just asked a question. I have done several probably because I have one in my show room. I used 5 minute epoxy with food coloring, simple.

Earl, why am I not surprised you'd have one in your showroom? If I recall you used to sell chipmunks screwing.
