I enjoyed Fish Stuffer's post of Jun, 2018 - 10 Things every shop should have. It gave me an idea. Many, many shops I've seen over the years are more cluttered than not. Space is always at a premium in most busy shops, therefore to keep things well organized and tidy takes time that can be used better in productive activities, like keeping the cash flowing on customers' orders.
Yet, I also know that those who aren't bothered by a cluttered shop can always (usually, prit-near every time) put their hands on every tool, can of what-not and sundry supplies when it's needed. A tidy showroom is important. A messy work room is not (necessarily).
It might be fun to see what your 'cluttered' shop looks like. Currently mine doesn't happen to be cluttered enough to make the cut, so here's a picture of a friend's shop over in Hungary. The name has been withheld to protect the guilty.

  2. I’m a clutter freak cant stand it !
It dont take 10 to 15 minutes to pick up, put up, sweep up. At the end of the day before locking the door in the evening. And if im just to exhausted at the end of the day, fine as soon as i walk in the door in the morning. Pick up, put up, sweep up.

Maybe its installed in my brain, from my early meat cutter days. Screw the market up all day, clean it up before we leave 364 days a year. ( closed Christmas)

That looks like a trip to the ER after an impalement. I agree with buckfever. Nothing can compare to starting fresh every day.

Too many projects going on at the same time doesn’t help at all. I moved this summer 400 miles away. Twice the shop space plus storage above. Bought three metal storage cabinets plus another industrial storage rack. I’m still cramped. The problem is I move all four chest freezers into the shop, built a 4x8 salting table and put it in wheels. Also brought all my tool chests in my shop plus gave one away to one of my sons. Lost a lot of space to that snap-on tool chest and two extra freezers.
In the move threw a lot of stuff away. And built a 12x16’ foot two story Dutch barn to store wood working tools and cronstruction tools.
    Wish I had more space.
At least it keeps my wife out. She can’t stand clutter.
That’s why I posted have 2-3 times the square footage you think you’ll need as well as storage.

Ron, I'm still a guy. Don't swing that way. But I figured if I didn't have time to do it right, when was I going to find time to do it over. The taxidermy shop was always neat (can't say that now that it's a wood shop). When I worked on a piece, I picked up and cleaned up before leaving that piece. When I skinned out a deer, even if there were a dozen more to be caped out, the table was clean When the next one came in. I have a shadow board wall and every tool is in it's place. At the end of the day, if there were any missing spots, the tool was found and put back on the board. My shop NEVER smelled like a meat cutting hours or a gut truck. As the income level of my clients grew, they expected it (and surely the wives who came with them did because they told me so.) I got more customers from those customers so I could continue raising my prices without discussion.
Unlike Frank Newmeyer, I'm not going to tell you that you need to wear black socks, long pants and a collared shirt in order to be successful. If you're happy with your clientele and they're happy with you, knock yourself out I grew up old school where cleanliness was next to Godliness.

You keep talking smack. I'll copy and paste this and send it to your wife who'll explain this better than I can.

The problem is usually too much JUNK! When I had my electronics repair shop I kept everything just about. (Who knows, I may need a part one day that is no longer available!) My shop was a mess. Every so often I cleaned it and then it took me forever to find what I was looking for. Sooner or later it became clustered again but I knew where everything was once again. After I closed the business and converting it to my taxidermy hobby shop I got a new outlook and I started putting things away in an organized fashion. Guess what? I can find stuff now faster and easier. How about that?! Like George, after I finish a job I clean up NOW.

Yep....this is how it starts! Next thing you know your standing naked in front of a mirror with your "junk" tucked in and your legs together to see how you'd look if you were a girl!!

For the love of God man, leave some crap laying around, before its to late!!!!!

Conjures up visions of buffalo bill in the Silence Of The Lambs. Still hard to imagine he went from that to captain on MONK.

I'm CDO (that's OCD in alphabetical order). Can't stand clutter but, sometimes, it can be quite busy in my little 15 X 25 ft. shop.
