It’s one of the best and safest products for this.

 

Now i've seen stop rot advertised for everything here. Is there anything stop rot isn't good for?

Even with Stop Rot, those brick hard capes are sometimes impossible to re-hydrate. I don't waste a lot of time on them. If they have an 18-20 inch neck size, I usually have capes left over from the previous year to mount them up. I saw off the antlers and toss the rest.

 

So one question is the deer your talking bout still on the skull/ rack and froze whole ? And not skinned off .

 

So if you would just recape them , would you tell your clients, or just do it . I get with a buck the rack is the trophy for the most part , but let’s say it was a doe if you recape that then it’s not the persons trophy at all . They are getting someone else deer . Not busting but asking , I have to tell them , most the time I have to recape it’s the hunters fault, but if these things were left in freezer to long , or maybe we did something else wrong , and it’s ours as the taxidermist fault what do we do or how should it be handled ? I tell them and let the chips fall were they may . I know of one taxidermist who recaped a deer and the guy came to pk it up and had pictures , his deer was double white patch throat , the one the cape it was mounted on didnt , the guy went out of his way to ruin the taxidermist reputation.

 

So true, when I get a frozen and this goes for any animal ( excluding fish lol)I don’t place it in the freezer but in my fridge or on the floor to thaw out. I want to work on that animal ASAP. So this way my client will get a phone call in a minimal two days if there’s an issue.
Doing this insures you and your client with any questions and he can’t say to you what did you do change hides on me. If you take care of issues ASAP you and your client will be much happier in the long run.

 

If it's a similar colored deer, and the same size, I don't say a word on small and medium deer. If the cape size is 20" or greater, I tell them they need another cape. They can buy one, or go kill another big deer. I deal with people all day long. If I make an unnecessary contact, that's an hour of my life I'll never get back. The less interaction with a client, the better...I promise!

 

Lost time is lost money. I let someone know asap to resolve any issues. When they are brought in frozen you don't know what you have to deal with. You can only look at the face and ears for freezer burn and as far as the rest of the cape it will have to thaw out.

How do you tell by looking at the face and ears if they are freezer burnt.

 

Looking at the nose , eyes, and ears will give you a clue. Excessive dryness is noticeable with freezer burn. The nose will be extremely dry and hard to turn as will the ears and eyes.
