tanning a boar with krowtann

never done a boar - but i have done coyote, fox, badger, coon, mt lion, buffalo and marten - should work for a boar

 

Joe, I tanned and mounted a lifesize javelina this summer and it turned out great. Also did a javelina shoulder mount with Krowtann.

 

Joe, I never tried tanning a boar, I send all out and have done commercially. But I have done a few thing's with krowtann and turned out just fine. Good Luck, Jim

 

Have tanned one boar and three javelina's with krowtan and they worked out just fine, will use it again on next one to come in.

 

I've tanned a boar and a couple of javelinas with it also. No problems here. Just be sure and flesh and degrease it well.

 

The flesh and degrease before tan is the key..heavy on the emphasis for degreasing...be sure to fully rinse the hide of degreaser Before placing it inthe krowtann....I just finished an 2 elk butts today for rump mounts (Anyone know of a good size rump form for these?)
and they were CHOCK FULL of fat...no wonder elk have such big asses...all fat...soaking in Krowtann now as we speak.

 

Krowtann works great on boar.

 

I tanned a boar this summer with Krowtann. The key is, like others have said, is to degrease properly. When it was done, I trimmed off the excess and left it outside for the remainder of the summer. Rain, heat, and snow and it has not slipped. Surprisingly, the neighborhood cats didn't even bother it.

 

tanned two boar with it..great stuff. Still had quite a bit of fat on them and they still tanned good...

 

Yeah speaking of fat I just pulled my elk shoulders and rump out of the tan and spun it in the washer after rinsing and washing it off...a small amount of slippage due to a pocket of fat between the skin and hair that i missed in the general fleshing...about a half dolloar size of white hide show through...I'll just flesh it out and glue hair back in or cut around it...no big deal...first slippage incident but not due to Krowtann..

 

I was just wondering what to use for degreasing the boar capes and when and how long to degrease them. I have degreased hog capes in the past with mineral spirits but that was after they had sat in a pickle for a day. I was wondering if you degrease the boar after rough fleshing and then put it in the krowtann??

 

take it to the car wash- PRESSURE.

 

In your boar DVD you shave the cape on the round knife, wash the skin in kemal 4 and batericide, salt the cape then degrease in blood out.

At this point instead of going into the pickle and eventually into Lutan F, would this be the start of the Krowtann? Followed by a neutralization based on their instructions.

I have both krowtann 2000 and the whitetail formula. I'd assume with the 2000 you'd want to oil the cape as you did in the video. Is this correct?

One other question in regards to your process. You used an epoxy based hide paste which krowtann advises against due to a reaction that may occur; did you use the epoxy based for a faster dry time?

I think that hog must have got the best of him...

 

I remember my first one well. I actually shaved the shield off with my Dakota 5. It was a job and I had to keep touching up my blade but I got it done. I would shave it off now with a sharp knife. You definitely earn your money with the greasy boogers.

 

I can't believe I answered a post that is 13 years old ! I am going to start using my reading glasses now for sure !!
